While at the Battle of Shiloh in Tennessee, I received a letter from one of our boys that I would like to share with you. In the modern world, I tried to scan it to send as an attachment but it is written in pencil and so light that the printer could not pick up all the words even with adjustments to the machine. So, I will do this by hand.
The envelope is addressed to:
Ladies Supporting Palmetto Btn, Town of Purdy, Shiloh, Tennessee
And it reads:
To the gracious souls, Ladies.
Thank you for the fine food and thoughtfulness you gave us whilst we were camped on the bloody field of Shiloh, Tennessee. I will carry the brow mop I received on every campaign until this war ends. As well, the sweet taste of candy will linger in my heart, and on my fingers, until it is expended in the delivering of our beloved colors on the other side of Victory!
From the depth of my belly.
